Bogong Ski Camp

Year 9 Ski Trip to Bogong

Last week the students from the year 9 IBL class travelled back up the Hume Highway to the snowfields for a 5 day ski camp. We were based at Bogong Outdoor School which is about 8 kms below the Falls Creek Ski Resort. We shared the experience with some Year 10 students from Cohuna, Rainbow and Hopetoun.

Our trip involved travelling for 7.5 hours on Monday, meeting everyone and collecting all our ski gear in preparation for learning to “cross country” ski on Tuesday. We were blessed with a perfect day-blue skies and no wind and the whole group spent their first ever day on cross-country skis traversing the panoramic tracks at the back of Falls Creek. There was much laughter, snowman building, the odd injury and a real appreciation of the beauty and serenity of the alpine environment.

Wednesday was nowhere near as sunny and clear (in fact it snowed on us in the afternoon) and we swapped our cross country gear for downhill skis and boots. Everyone loved the exhilaration of learning to stop, turn and fall with grace and dignity (except Che who wrecked his knee). We were in mixed groups with the students from the other schools and despite almost all the students being beginners, by the end of the day the kids were flying down intermediate runs and mastering the chairlifts.

Thursday saw the sun and blue skies return. The whole group elected for another day of downhill skiing and we tore up Sun Valley, wombat’s ramble, Drovers and Towers. Everyone had improved so much and we had a great time. Karah came to grief on the last corner of her final run but I believe that was so a handsome ski instructor could carry her back…

Finally it was back to Bogong to return all our gear, farewell all our new friends (and Courtney Higlett, our teacher who returned to the alpine school) and head off back to Lorne with a plan to head back to the snow as soon as we can convince our parents that this really is the ultimate holiday destination.
