Lorne – Aireys Inlet P-12 College has a strong commitment to Career Education and Pathways planning particularly with students in years 10-12. Year 10 and year 11 students undertaking studies in the Victorian Certificate of Applied Learning (VCAL) and Vocational Education Training (VET) have the opportunity to undertake work and vocational placements usually at the end of term 2.

Students in years 10, 11 and 12 participate in a Managed Individual Pathways (MIPs) program which is designed to support and provide guidance in both their senior school subject selections and career decisions as they move through school to the work force and further study. The program also seeks to facilitate students identifying relevant personal and academic goals during their final years of schooling.

The school has a designated Pathways Coordinator to assist students with advice about future career options and individual pathway directions through the senior years of schooling in addition to overseeing the school’s work experience program.

Prior to commencing Work Experience Year 10 students undertake an Occupational Health and Safety program  followed by an industry specific safety module. Our Work Experience program has been successful in providing a significant number of opportunities for students to obtain apprenticeships, part-time work or school based apprenticeships as a result of their participation in the school’s work experience program.


Think about your interests, hobbies, abilities and values. What do you enjoy doing? How do you spend your spare time? What are you good at? What subjects do you enjoy at school? What’s important to you? Thinking about answering these questions will hopefully start giving you some clues. But remember: you’re probably likely to have several careers in your lifetime … so only think about the next 5 or so years. Think also about the type of study or work you might want to get involved in after completing school. You might want to consider an apprenticeship or a traineeship where you can earn an income while you gain on the job training.

  • Job Outlook – Job Outlook is a careers and market research information site to help you decide on a possible future career. Have a go at the Career Quiz as a means to finding jobs which are suited to your interests and skills. www.joboutlook.gov.au

RMIT runs short courses which can improve your skills, help with career decisions and prepare you for future folio presentations. They cover things like architectural drawing, Autocad, drawing, fashion, studio textiles, design jobs, visual/fine art, desk top publishing, graphic design, advertising, interior decoration, , visual merchandising,.   • Like working with numbers? – Like numbers, and want to work in a fast paced and well paid business environment? Then how about Actuarial Studies? The profession of actuary was second on the “10 best Jobs of 2012” study ranking by Wall Street Journal’s job site CareerCast.com. The course gives grounding in traditional actuarial skills of mathematics, statistics, demography, finance and economics, taught in the B. Commerce and B economics. If you plan to study actuarial studies you are advised to take specialist maths in year 12

  • RMIT’s Certificate 4 in Audio-visual Technology may suit. Graduates are sought after for work in – AV operation for live events, broadcast TV and Radio, Education AV support, lighting operation, AV installation and vision operation. Technically minded? Interested in a career in building? Take on a bricklaying apprenticeship and discover a hands-on satisfaction like no other.

  • Australian apprenticeships are not all the same and bricklaying is no exception. If you enjoy being outdoors, like working with your hands and love seeing the end results of your work – becoming a qualified bricklayer could be just for you. A Bricklaying Apprenticeship is an industry recognised trade qualification (Certificate III) that provides the basis of many building and construction career opportunities, for example further study for a Certificate IV in Building and Construction leads to becoming a qualified builder.  It also provides a stepping stone into other roles such as an estimator or leading hand.  This apprenticeship is a competency based course, meaning the faster the apprentice learns, the quicker the apprenticeship is completed.
