On the first Tuesday and Wednesday of the school year the Year 12 VCE students travelled to Bimbi Park caravan park near Cape Otway for a two day camp designed to prepare our students and those from Apollo Bay for their final year of schooling and in particular VCE English. Students firstly attended study skill sessions at the Apollo Bay Campus run by the ‘Elevate’ education company with particular attention on study skills and mnemonics.
Then it was off to the Redwood forest near Apollo Bay for an invigorating game of laser tag and then to Bimbi Park amidst the beautiful natural setting of Cape Otway. Students settled into their cabin accommodation then spent four intensive sessions over the next day and a half concentrating on VCE English skills and working towards completion of their first assessment task. On the Tuesday evening camp owners Frank, Katrina and their two sons cooked everyone pizzas in the outdoor wood oven, then we all watched the movie and Year 12 text ‘Pleasantville’ in the outdoor cinema. With possums and koalas moving around in the trees above whilst the movie was showing, students had an experience quite unique to a Year 12 study camp.
The camp also provided an opportunity for students from Lorne and Apollo Bay to work closely together and we look forward to further joint activities throughout the year.
A big thank you to staff who organised, attended and ran the activities: Geoff Couper, Angela Beeby, Linda Davies and Sara Cook. And a huge thank you to Frank, Katrina and the team at Bimbi Park for allowing us use of the Bimbi Park facilities and accommodating our students cost free.
