Year 10 Science Excursion to GTAC

On Tuesday 14th of May the Year 10 Science class headed to Melbourne to attend a practical class at the Gene Technology Access Centre. This was a great opportunity to use a lot of equipment not available to schools to do some investigative work at a micro-biological level. Students investigated how to identify cows with high whey protein levels which is important for farmers to know when breeding their stock. They also performed a genetic screen test for Achondroplasia ( a genetic condition associated with dwarfism) using restriction enzymes to cut DNA and electrophoresis to analyse the results. Students also visited Melbourne University for lunch and to get a feel for further education facilities.
